Christina Whiting Artist Statement

Many people prefer to live within their comfort zones, viewing vulnerability as unsafe or a sign of weakness. As a writer and photographer, I actively seek out ways in which I can rub up against the razor’s edge of my own discomfort, for I have found that it is within these spaces that my inspiration and creativity not only dwell, but also thrive. I’m not afraid to admit my foibles, for saying, “hey you, over there, I see your bumps and bruises, do you see mine too”, for in photographing and writing about subjects that are universal, be they beautiful or difficult, I’m striving to create a bridge of connection. I am fierce in my intent to write about and photograph real life with its nuanced beauty and tragedy, clarity and confusion and I work hard for my words and images to give the reader and viewer pause, to provide an opportunity for contemplation and consideration of another way of thinking, doing or being.
